Dental hygiene is one of the most underestimated hygiene practice one could even think of. You can take a bath twice a day, keep it all up with your manicures and pedicures every month, get a tan and what not. However, if you forget to follow a hygiene practice for your smile, every hygiene practice mentioned above will go in vain. Hence, oral hygiene practice should never be neglected. See this article on how to avoid the ‘dental nightmare’:

  1. Brush your teeth right.

First things first. Learn the basics of how to brush your teeth properly. Make sure you position the bristles at a 45-degree angle near the gum line— gum line and the surface of the tooth should be in touch with the bristles. Also, the outer surface of the teeth should be brushed with a back-forth and up-down motion gently so as to avoid the gums to bleed. In order to clean the inner surface of the teeth, place the bristles at a 45-degree and repeat the back-forth-up-down motion. Last, but not the least, brush the roof of your mouth and the tongue to remove dead cells and bacteria which causes bad breath.

Brush your teeth twice a day for a healthier dental hygiene. It also helps in preventing the acid build-up which is caused by the breakdown of the food. Also, make sure that you rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after every meal to avoid the build-up of the acid as mentioned above.

  1. Flossing

Yeah, flossing seems like a boring chore. But it when it comes to oral hygiene, this must not be neglected. Flossing helps in removing food particles and avoids the formation of plaque between the teeth. It also helps you to clean your teeth at places where the bristles of the brush cannot reach. Hence you must floss every day.

  1. Avoid consuming tobacco, sodas, coffee, alcohol

Consumption of tobacco causes oral cancer. You can do a great favour to your teeth by avoiding it. However, substances like sodas, coffee, and alcohol contain phosphorous which is necessary for your teeth. But over-consumption can cause harm not only to your teeth, but it adds to the fats and calories department too. Hence, moderation is wise.

  1. It’s always a good practice to consume calcium and other vital nutrients for your health.

Calcium is extremely vital for your teeth and bones. It’s always wise to consume dairy products and green veggies. You can also prefer taking calcium supplements. Vitamin B complex and D are also good for gum and teeth protection from cracking and bleeding.

  1. Visit your dentist at least twice a year.

Although it might add a lot to your expenses. But it will literally hurt less (your tooth), if you visit your dentist at least twice a year to keep your oral hygiene healthy.

  1. Clean your tongue daily.

After brushing your teeth, do not forget to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth in order to remove the bacteria that cause bad breath. You can also use a professional tongue cleaner to eliminate the bacteria and add gold to your oral hygiene.
